Boston got some much-needed good news about one of its most important pitchers

The Boston Red Sox have had some bad luck throughout Spring Training so far.

Boston had a rough 2023 season and many hoped the club would respond with a few big signings in free agency. The Red Sox signed Lucas Giolito but has decided to cut salary and hasn’t made any other notable additions to the rotation.

The Red Sox got some terrible news as Giolito possibly could end up missing the entire 2024 season due to an elbow injury. Boston has dealt with a handful of other injuries, as well.

Red Sox reliever Chris Martin had a scare Saturday as he was forced to cut his bullpen session short due to groin tightness, but the club got some good news about his Sunday, according to WEEI’s Rob Bradford.

“Just talked to Chris Martin,” Bradford said. “Walking fine and said cutting (bullpen) session short yesterday (tight groin) was just precautionary. Playing catch now.”

Martin was one of the Red Sox’s most important relievers last season and is expected to play a large role with the club again in 2024. The bullpen is one of the club’s strong points with Martin and Kenley Jansen but if the veteran goes down with injury, that perception could change.

Boston has a lot of work to do to improve the club but Opening Day is right around the corner. The Red Sox could still use another starter or two. The rotation should be the club’s priority right now but if injuries continue to pop up elsewhere, it could complicate things even further.
