Could Dodgers’ Infield Defense Prompt Them to Sign Padres Star in Free Agency?

Just weeks before the Dodgers’ season kicked off in Korea, the team announced a major shift to its infield defense. Star Mookie Betts would be taking over at shortstop in light of Gavin Lux‘s shortcomings in the field.

Lux, coming off a major knee injury, is now at second base. But the problems along the Dodgers infield don’t stop there. Max Muncy at third base is a cause for concern due to his lack of movement, giving Los Angeles one of the poorest infield defenses across the league.

This may be one of the only weaknesses that the Dodgers have this year that could backfire on them if they aren’t careful. There has been talk about them going after an upgrade — notably Willy Adames from the Milwaukee Brewers. So far, Milwaukee isn’t ready to play ball.

Andrew Friedman recently told Dodgers Nation he won’t re-evaluate moving Lux to second base until the 2024 season is over. That wouldn’t preclude them from making a change after the season. Now, one national writer suggests the Dodgers could pursue an infielder they’re very familiar with: Ha-Seong Kim of the San Diego Padres.

Writing in the New York Post, Jon Heyman speculated on the possibility of Kim joining the Dodgers’ infield in 2025:

“The Dodgers are great but one scout called their infield defense, even with terrific 1B Freddie Freeman, “the worst in the game.” Early speculation for next winter: Padres SS Ha-Seong Kim as Dodgers target?”

Kim will be a free agent at the end of this season. He is expected to have multiple suitors. After winning a Gold Glove award and collecting down-ballot MVP votes with the Padres in 2023, Kim will be entering a consequential free-agent “walk year” with plenty at stake.

The Korean star has been growing his game each season that he’s been in the league and he is scheduled to earn a big payday. There have been reports that the Padres do want to extend him, but the price may be above what they are able to shell out.

Last season with San Diego, Kim hit .260 with 17 home runs and 60 runs batted in. He won a Gold Glove at the utility spot, and can play shortstop or second base.

Another National League West team could pursue Kim, as well. The San Francisco Giants have been linked with Kim previously, in part due to his connection with their new star from Korea, outfielder Jung Hoo Lee. The two have spoken about teaming up before.

If the Dodgers do want Kim, they may be forced into a bidding war. But this is nothing new for their front office. The desire to upgrade the infield could have them landing another international star in the process.
