Red Sox Loosely Linked To Young Cubs Slugger In Possible Surprising Trade

The Boston Red Sox will have some serious decisions to make this offseason.

Boston already has made one intriguing addition this offseason by landing former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tyler O’Neill in a trade. The Red Sox have a lot of other work to do. The outfield was viewed as a position of strength for Boston but there have been some rumblings that the club could deal some of its regulars away to help landing starting pitching.

While that seems like a solid route to go, if the Red Sox were to trade some of their outfielders, they would need to make more additions. Boston also needs to add help at second base. The Red Sox struggled up the middle last season and have been linked to multiple infielders to help fix the issue.

One intriguing player who has popped up as a trade option who could help the club in both the outfield as well as second base surprisingly has been Chicago Cubs’ young utility man, Christopher Morel, according to Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer.

“The Cubs arguably shouldn’t want to trade Christopher Morel,” Rymer said. “He’s a power supply in a lineup that doesn’t have a ton of it, as well as a versatile defender whose club control runs through 2028…

“Morel, 24, hit 37 home runs in 136 games between the minors and majors this year. Even just with the 26 he hit in across 107 major league games, he would have topped José Ramírez (24) for Cleveland’s team lead. Other Fits: Boston Red Sox, Miami Marlins.”

While this doesn’t mean the Red Sox will go out and land him, it is interesting that Morel has been mentioned in trade rumors. He is just 24 years old and isn’t eligible for free agency until 2029. Last season he clubbed 26 home runs, drove in 70 runs, and slashed .247/.313/.508 in just 107 games.

He saw time all over the diamond and spent time at second base, shortstop, third base, left field, center field, and right field. If the Red Sox could make a big trade, Morel may be a guy to look out for.
