Insider Links Chicago Cubs to Former Astros Star Reliever

Another bullpen addition could be on the horizon for the Chicago Cubs this offseason.

There have been a lot of hints from MLB insiders and Jed Hoyer himself that the Chicago Cubs aren’t done adding pieces to their roster this offseason.

What those additions ultimately look like will be determined, but after one of the worst possible starts the Cubs could have had, it seems like they are continuing their search for upgrades.

Star players will always be at the forefront of thought and discussion.

With Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman and even Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery and Josh Hader still available, those names will continue to be on the wish list.

However, Chicago can still improve their roster in other ways before adding the star power that they’ve been looking for this winter.

Bruce Levine of 670 the Score spoke with Brett Taylor of Bleacher Nation about what could be on the horizon for the Cubs.

The insider said they are targeting bullpen pieces.

“Levine listed three righty relievers to ‘keep an eye on’ for the Cubs: Robert Stephenson (whom we’ve heard about before and who would be an awesome, expensive signing), Ryne Stanek, and Adam Ottavino,” Taylor wrote in his article.

Like he mentioned, Stephenson is a hot candidate on the market after having a resurgent back-half of 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays.

But the interesting one that was mentioned by Levine is Ryne Stanek.

The former Houston Astros reliever was a staple in their bullpen that was at the top of Major League rankings for the past few years.

He had the best stretch of his career during his three seasons with the Astros, posting an ERA of 2.90 and ERA+ of 142 during his 186 appearances and 173 2/3 innings pitched.

Stanek would be a major addition to Chicago’s bullpen.

The unit largely fell apart last year after being spread thin and was a main reason why they missed out on the playoffs.

It’s been a surprisingly quiet market for the right-hander, especially considering the three-season stretch he’s had. Maybe his 4.09 ERA last year is scaring some teams off, but Stanek is a proven reliever with high-leverage postseason experience.

The Cubs certainly need an upgrade within this unit, and it seems like they could be looking to add one with playoff and championship pedigree.
