Yankees Could Sign Former MVP In Possible Surprising Move

Could the New York Yankees bring another slugger to town?

New York Yankees: Luis Severino isn't focused on Gerrit Cole in ALCS

New York already has drastically improved the club this offseason thanks in large part to the club’s acquisition of superstar slugger Juan Soto. The Yankees still have some money to spend, but it’s unclear what they will do.

The most likely option for New York would be some help for the bullpen, but there are some other intriguing options out there.

New York was seen as the frontrunner to land 2019 National League Most Valuable Player Cody Bellinger, but many speculated a move wasn’t going to happen after landing Soto.

While a move may be unlikely, some think a signing still is a possibility, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

“Another exec who predicted a (Blake Snell)-(San Francisco Giants) match also pegged the Yankees as the team to sign Bellinger, who could see time at first base, center field, and DH in 2024, then potentially take over at first base in 2025, if New York declines Anthony Rizzo’s club option at the end of this season,” Feinsand said. “I don’t know if those are the exact moves,” the exec said. “But I think both of those clubs have money to spend and need to do something to make a splash.”

Bellinger would be an intriguing addition for the Yankees, but a move still should be considered unlikely. He will get a large deal that may be too expensive for New York at this point.

If the Yankees somehow could bring him in, New York’s offense immediately would be considered one of the top in the league on paper. A move may be a nice idea, but it still would be surprising.
