The Chicago Bears appear ready to bring back head coach Matt Eberflus in 2024, but what does that mean for the team’s future at quarterback?
With an offseason full of big decisions upcoming, the Bears have a massive one to make at QB with no clear direction to lean. Justin Fields has warts, but he’s also flashed tantalizing ability over three seasons as starter. However, the Bears may be in the unique position to select the best available QB in April’s NFL Draft.
Ahead of Week 17’s action, a report from Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network indicated that due to the team winning four of the last six games, Eberflus would likely return in 2024. If true, it should be a sign that the organization also intends to keep Fields beyond this season.
It doesn’t make sense for the Bears to strap a coach already on the hot seat with a rookie signal-caller. Even if Fields and former QB Mitch Trubisky played under new head coaches in year two of their careers in Chicago, the franchise may have finally learned from its mistakes.
Fields’ inconsistent play is the reason there’s discussion over his future in the first place. However, his growth teases exciting potential that might be worth waiting for and the Bears seemingly agree.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Fields has the team’s attention.
“Many people around the league believe Chicago should just take USC’s Caleb Williams and start over,” Fowler wrote. “But Fields has made this decision difficult with his toughness, work ethic and playmaking. He’s shown some growth over the past five weeks, and he’s very well liked in the locker room.”
Since returning in Week 11 from a thumb injury that caused him to miss four games, Fields has been solid, averaging 190 passing yards and 70 rushing yards with six total touchdowns. His numbers aren’t overwhelming, but positive things are happening for the team as his confidence grows.
Whether or not the incremental gains in his game and the positive vibes around the team are enough for the Bears to pass on the quarterback of their choice with the No. 1 pick in a few months remains to be seen. Though Fields has made it interesting, should the team still be on the fence, he has two more games in which to make his case.
