The Toronto Blue Jays already have landed one former member of the New York Yankees but it sounds like another move could be on the horizon.
Toronto recently brought in former Yankees utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa and now reportedly has shown interest in also signing former Yankees slugger Gio Urshela, according to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.
“They have shown some off-season interest in Amed Rosario and Gio Urshela, two players who offer similar skill sets, but it’s not clear how strong that interest is now that (Isiah Kiner-Falefa) is in place,” Nicholson-Smith said. “At this point, it’s becoming more likely the Blue Jays add three or four useful position players instead of structuring their winter around one superstar.
“This wasn’t plan A – everyone agrees on that. But Kiner-Falefa helps raise the floor of this roster, and that’s important. Now it’s up to the front office to find ways to raise the lineup’s offensive ceiling, too.”
Urshela is an eight-year veteran and spent three seasons with the Yankees from 2019 through 2021. His best season occurred in 2019 where he clubbed 21 home runs, drove in 74 runs, and slashed .314/.355/.534 in 132 games.
He spent the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Angels and appeared in 62 games. Urshela hit two home runs, drove in 24 runs, and slashed .299/.329/.374. The 32-year-old saw time at first base, second base, shortstop, and third base last season with the Angels.
It’s unclear if the Blue Jays will land Urshela, but it’s clear that they at least have shown interest in him.
