Carl Edwards Jr. Reportedly Opts Out Of Deal With Cubs

After impressing in Spring Training, Carl Edwards Jr. has decided to opt out of his current minor-league contract with the Chicago Cubs. At the time of the signing, it appeared he could be a lock to make the club barring injury or a down performance.

The Cubs are always looking for effective arms in any place they can find them. Sometimes this approach ends up not working, but the Cubs are still losing hardly anything in this situation.

With a solid showing in camp, it would not come as any sort of shock if Edwards Jr. were to be picked up by another team for bullpen help.

Given the additions of Yency Almonte and Hector Neris, it seemed like an uphill battle for someone in Edwards Jr.’s position to make the team. Both pitchers appear to be in for important roles to start the season.

Edwards Jr. spent the 2023 season as a member of the Washington Nationals. His numbers were solid, but the season was cut short due to a stress fracture in his shoulder. This could be a reason why Edwards Jr. eventually settled for a minor-league deal in January.

As the Cubs march on towards the regular season, it appears that Hayden Wesneski and Luke Little may make the team in the bullpen. Each would serve an important role as Wesneski carries experience as a starter while Little is a big left-handed option out of the pen.

Manager Craig Counsell will certainly have many pitchers at his disposal given last year’s solid corps and young influx of talent. Both groups of players will be relied upon as the team makes it’s push towards a postseason appearance.
