Ex-Dodgers All-Star Could Be Option For Yankees To Add Depth To Starting Rotation

The New York Yankees could use one more starting pitcher to add depth to the rotation.

New York is considered one of the top teams in the American League but still has been linked to multiple available players. The Yankees’ starting rotation clearly is the club’s biggest weakness at this point because they are relying heavily on players having bounce-back seasons in 2024.

The Yankees have been linked to superstar hurler Blake Snell on multiple occasions but a signing seems extremely unlikely. Landing Snell would be great, but financially it doesn’t make much sense. A deal with Snell would lead to a massive tax penalty for the Yankees.

If the Yankees still want to add some more depth, though, there are other options out there. Opening Day is right around the corner but there are some solid options out there in free agency who could be signed for cheap.

One player who could be a solid pickup to add more depth is six-time All-Star Zack Greinke. He was one of the top pitchers in baseball for a while — arguably at his best while a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers — but now is 40 years old and isn’t what he once was. Greinke still is available in free agency despite making it clear he wants to pitch in 2024.

While this is the case, he still could be a good pickup. Greinke struggled last season with a 5.06 ERA with the Kansas City Royals in 30 appearances. He was very solid in 2022, though. Greinke logged a 3.68 ERA in 26 starts.

New York struggled with a plethora of injuries last season and depth was a real issue. It could never hurt to add more depth so the club could avoid this issue again. Greinke is a future Hall of Famer and has plenty of experience. Why not give him a chance?
