After months of speculation and rumors, we’re now just hours away of finding out just where exactly Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy will land in the 2024 NFL Draft.
JJ McCarthy is considered one of the “big four” quarterback prospects in this year’s class, along with eventual first overall pick and USC star Caleb Williams, LSU’s Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye.
The national championship-winning quarterback has been heavily linked to the Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants and Denver Broncos. There’s always the chance of a surprise team coming out of nowhere to make a run at McCarthy, too.
The Las Vegas Raiders need a long-term answer at quarterback. And perhaps Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams will try to land Matthew Stafford’s successor in this year’s QB-heavy class.
During an interview on “The Rich Eisen Show”, JJ McCarthy revealed that the G-Men are the team he’s spent the most time with leading up to the draft.
“New York Giants, I’ve spent the most time with,” McCarthy said. “They’re a phenomenal staff. Love coach (Brian) Daboll, love Mr. (GM Joe) Schoen…Coach Kafka, Chicago guy.”
The Giants handed Daniel Jones a four-year extension worth $160 million last offseason, but his contract is structured in a way where they can cut ties with him and take on painless dead money charges.
New York holds the No. 6 selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. The teams who pick before them (in order from 1 to 5) are the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, New England Patriots, Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers.
JJ McCarthy Makes Perfect Sense For Giants
Given his lackluster production and injury history up to this point, the Giants would be wise to move on from Daniel Jones after next season.
JJ McCarthy is a project who might need to sit for a year or two before taking over as a starting quarterback. If he heads to the Giants, McCarthy can sit behind Jones for a year before taking over the reins in 2025.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll did wonders working with Josh Allen in Buffalo, and he helped Jones enjoy a career year in 2023. An offensive-minded guru like Daboll is more than capable of fully unlocking the talents of an elite QB prospect like McCarthy.
