Rangers Seen As Possible Landing Spot For Ex-Red Sox All-Star

Texas could use some more firepower and one former Red Sox All-Star makes sense

One former Boston Red Sox All-Star is looking with his third club in three seasons.

J.D. Martinez spent five seasons in Boston and helped lead the club to the 2018 World Series and racked up four All-Star appearances. The 36-year-old left in free agency last offseason and joined the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Martinez continued to impress and launched 33 home runs and drove in 103 runs in 113 games, but will be signing elsewhere because Los Angeles landed two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani.

It’s unclear where Martinez will land, but one team that has been floated as a possible landing spot is the Texas Rangers, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.

“The world champions have been slowed by their local TV issue, which remains somewhat unresolved,” Heyman said. “They’d like to bring back (Jordan Montgomery), and the belief is he’d like to return to the team he helped win its first World Series. They seek a reliever (David Robertson is a target) and could use a DH. J.D. Martinez could fit if they get the funds.”

Martinez clearly still has a lot left in the tank. The reigning champions are continuing to add in free agency and nabbing someone like Martinez could make a lot of sense.

Texas already has brought in one former Red Sox fan-favorite and World Series champion in Nathan Eovaldi. Why not bring in another?

Martinez has been one of the top offensive players in baseball and could go a long way in adding even more firepower to Texas.
