Red Sox Insider Throws Cold Water On Boston’s Chances Of Landing Rising Star

Boston could use another frontline starter but it doesn’t sound like a move is coming

Red Sox Insider Throws Cold Water On Boston's Chances Of Landing Rising Star - Sports Illustrated Inside The Red Sox

Could the Boston Red Sox end up landing one of the top remaining free-agent pitchers?

Boston has been linked to seemingly everyone who has been available in some way this offseason but hasn’t made as many moves as expected. The Red Sox still have plenty of work to do.

The starting rotation is still the biggest question mark for the Red Sox. There are some interesting players still available and the top two remaining free-agent hurlers are Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell.

It’s unclear how willing Boston is to spend the price it will cost to bring in either but that hasn’t stopped rumors from swirling. While this is the case, the Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham threw cold water on the idea.

“If you’re hoping the Sox will suddenly change course and sign somebody like Jordan Montgomery, good luck,” Abraham said. “Agents say the Sox do little more than check in on such players.”

Landing someone like Montgomery could go a long way for Boston. He is the exact type of pitcher Boston needs. The big lefty is very steady and also has postseason success under his belt.

While this is the case, it sounds like he may end up being out of the Red Sox’s budget. Boston does have money to spend and easily could land Montgomery if it wanted, but it doesn’t sound like that is going to happen.

Rumors continue to swirl but it doesn’t sound like a deal is going to come to fruition.
