Royals Sign Ex-Red Sox Catcher As He Looks To Make It Back To Big Leagues

It sounds like one former member of the Red Sox has found a new home with the Royals

Royals Sign Ex-Red Sox Catcher As He Looks To Make It Back To Big Leagues | Yardbarker

One former member of the Boston Red Sox is getting another chance at making the big leagues.

Former Red Sox catcher Sandy León has bounced around the league since leaving Boston ahead of the 2020 campaign. Since then, he has seen time at the big league level with Cleveland Guardians, Miami Marlins, Minnesota Twins, and Texas Rangers.

León now is getting a chance to make the big leagues with another club as he officially signed a minor league deal with the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday with an invitation to Spring Training, according to the club.

“We have signed (catcher) Sandy León to a minor league contract with an invitation to big league Spring Training,” the club said.

It’s not too surprising to see a team like Kansas City taking a chance on León. He is a 12-year veteran with plenty of big-league experience. Kansas City seemingly is set at catcher with Salvador Pérez on the roster, but it could never hurt to add more depth.

If he can impress in Spring Training, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see him get another chance at the big league level. He has shown throughout his career that he is steady defensively but has some struggles offensively.

He likely won’t play a massive role with the Royals, but he can’t hurt them. If he can shine in Spring Training, maybe he will make the big league club to provide depth. If he doesn’t impress, he could go to the minor leagues and be an option in case of injury at an extremely low cost.
