Yankees Have ‘Dabbled’ In Sweepstakes For Superstar; Could Surprising Move Be Coming?

The New York Yankees still could surprise some people this offseason.

New York has significantly improved the club this offseason but there still is some room for growth. The Yankees could use another starting pitcher and although a major addition may be unlikely, it could still happen.

The Yankees offered a contract to the 2023 National League Cy Young Award Blake Snell but hasn’t gotten a deal done yet. This doesn’t mean one can’t happen, though. New York reportedly is the only club to offer Snell a deal at this point in the offseason.

Snell still likely will land elsewhere at a price New York doesn’t want to spend, but a move can’t be ruled out. New York continues to be mentioned as a possible option and has “dabbled” in the sweepstakes, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

“The Cubs could re-sign (Cody Bellinger), lock down third with (Matt Chapman), or pivot to either Snell or (Jordan Montgomery),” Passan said. “Texas and (the Boston Red Sox) make sense for Montgomery, while the Yankees and (Los Angeles Angels) have dabbled in the Snell sweepstakes.”

Snell is a star and one of the top pitchers in baseball. If the Yankees could land someone of his caliber to add to a rotation that already has Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, and Marcus Stroman, they arguably would have the top rotation in baseball.

He is a two-time Cy Young Award winner and if the Yankees truly are going all in on the 2024 campaign, it could make some sense to bring him in.
